OpenAI and Nvidia Partnerships Shifting as Microsoft Competes
OpenAI’s relationship with Microsoft has soured due to the latter’s launch of competing products against OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Initially, Microsoft invested up to $10 billion in OpenAI, positioning itself as a key partner. However, now Nvidia is viewed as a more strategic investment for those seeking exposure to OpenAI, particularly as the company prepares for an IPO.
Nvidia’s dominance in the AI chip market is evident, posting an impressive 85% year-over-year revenue growth in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, with net income more than tripling. OpenAI anticipates spending up to $115 billion through 2029 on AI infrastructure, mostly for Nvidia chips, which have become a crucial component for scaling its services.
While Nvidia is not reliant on OpenAI, it remains the preferred supplier due to its unmatched performance in the industry. Competitors like Broadcom and Advanced Micro Devices exist but fail to match Nvidia’s scale and profitability.
