Meta Platforms Inc. (META) announced late Wednesday it will invest over C$13 billion to construct its first data center in Canada, located in Sturgeon County, Alberta. This facility, optimized for AI workloads, marks the company’s 33rd data center globally and will have a power capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW).

During peak construction, the project is expected to employ over 3,000 workers, with more than 300 operational jobs available once completed. Additionally, Meta plans to allocate around C$60 million for local infrastructure improvements and support local nonprofits.

Meta has coordinated with Greenlight Limited Partnership, Altalink, Capitol Power, and the Alberta Electric System Operator to proactively address the energy requirements for the data center. The company ensures it covers all expenses related to the data center’s energy use, water, and wastewater services, so consumers will not face increased costs.
