Hogs Experience Mixed Market Activity on Friday

Lean hog futures are mixed as of midday, with contracts ranging from 50 cents higher to a dime lower. On Friday, August 26, the USDA reported a national base hog price decrease of $4.70 to $97.06, while the CME Lean Hog Index rose by 40 cents to $97.48.

The USDA’s pork carcass cutout value increased by $1.06 to $105.54, with all primals reported higher. Additionally, federally inspected hog slaughter was estimated at 479,000 head for Thursday, bringing the week’s total to 1.859 million head—9,000 head above the previous week but down 1,425 head compared to the same week last year.

Current prices for hog contracts are as follows: Aug 26 hogs at $102.650 (up $0.500), Oct 26 hogs at $88.825 (down $0.075), and Dec 26 hogs at $80.225 (up $0.100).
