Ford and GM Expand Focus on Defense Contracts
General Motors (GM) has secured a multiyear contract to produce the U.S. Army’s Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV), marking a significant move in its renewed defense business strategy. GM’s defense division aims to achieve approximately $700 million in revenue by 2026, with a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) exceeding 30%. Meanwhile, Ford is actively engaging in negotiations with European defense departments to supply trucks and software, though no contracts have been finalized as of yet.
Ford and GM’s competitive positioning in the defense sector comes as the U.S. Defense Department seeks to diversify its contractors. The recent contracts will allow GM and Ford to leverage existing manufacturing capacities, potentially filling gaps in production and increasing profit margins. As GM’s defense operations are more established, the company appears to have a head start over Ford in this sector.
