July 2023 was marked by significant declines in the space stock sector. Notable companies such as BlackSky (BKSY) fell nearly 20%, while Rocket Lab (RKLB), AST SpaceMobile (ASTS), and Planet Labs (PL) experienced losses exceeding 30%. SpaceX (SPCX), following its record IPO, saw its stock drop over 50% from a peak on June 16, 2023.
Despite falling stock prices, many of these companies reported strong business performance. BlackSky posted a 50% year-over-year revenue increase, achieving positive adjusted EBITDA. Redwire (RDW) reported an almost 90% revenue boost with a backlog of $542 million, and SpaceX’s earnings report indicated a 92% rise in revenue, with its AI segment growing by 247%. The total addressable market for defense-related space operations is estimated at $30-40 billion, with potential growth as geopolitical tensions rise.
The broader space economy, encompassing sectors like satellite communications and lunar infrastructure, is projected to approach $100 billion, with significant investments expected in orbital data centers and satellite servicing. These areas could spawn new revenue streams and opportunities for investors, especially among companies like Rocket Lab, BlackSky, and AST SpaceMobile, which are well-positioned for future growth.
