Hogs Experience Decline on Thursday

Lean hog futures experienced losses ranging from 20 cents to $1.70 across most contracts. As of Thursday afternoon, the USDA reported the national base hog price at $97.37, marking an increase of $1.56 from the previous day. The CME Lean Hog Index also decreased, standing at $95.89 as of August 11.

In the week ending August 6, weekly export sales data revealed sales of 36,335 metric tons (MT) of pork for 2026, the highest in six weeks. Mexico was the largest buyer with 14,200 MT, followed by Japan with 6,400 MT. However, shipments totaled 30,632 MT— a three-week low— with Mexico receiving 15,100 MT and Japan 3,900 MT.

The USDA reported the pork carcass cutout value fell by $1.23 to $98.92. On Thursday, the estimated federally inspected hog slaughter reached 484,000 head, bringing the weekly total to 1.906 million head; this is 44,000 head higher than the previous week but down 11,165 head compared to the same week last year.
