Live cattle futures rose by $1.82 to $3.52 on Thursday, with cash trade increasing to $220 on Wednesday, a $2 increase from Tuesday. Dressed sales were also noted at $345 in the north, while the Fed Cattle Exchange online auction showed dressed sales at $340-341 for 80 of the 2,002 heads offered.
The USDA reported a six-week low in beef export sales for the week ending August 20, totaling 9,172 MT, with Japan as the top buyer at 2,200 MT, followed by South Korea at 2,100 MT. Weekly shipments were recorded at 11,806 MT, also the lowest in six weeks.
Wholesale boxed beef prices decreased in the Thursday PM report, with Choice boxes falling by $1.77 to $381.36 and Select boxes down by $2.49 to $359.19. The USDA estimated Thursday’s federally inspected cattle slaughter at 105,000 head, pushing the weekly total to 415,000 head—an increase of 6,000 head from the previous week but 50,423 head below the same week last year.
