Key Facts on Nuclear Energy’s Future
Projections by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) indicate that data centers are set to increase their share of U.S. electricity consumption from 5% to 20% by 2035, driven largely by the growing demand for energy-intensive technologies like artificial intelligence. As countries aim to triple their nuclear capacity globally by 2050, the U.S. seeks to quadruple its own capacity in the same timeframe, generating significant opportunities for nuclear energy and related technologies.
The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded the Tennessee Valley Authority a $400 million grant to accelerate the development of the BWRX-300, a small modular reactor (SMR) being constructed by GE Vernova and Hitachi in Ontario, which is projected to begin operations by 2029. Additionally, Centrus Energy received $900 million to expand its uranium enrichment facility in Piketon, Ohio, in response to U.S. laws mandating a shift away from Russian-sourced nuclear fuel.
