Uber Technologies and British AI company Wayve have launched the first supervised autonomous rides in London, available for UberX, Uber Electric, and Uber Comfort users at no additional cost. This service begins immediately and will expand gradually based on demand and regulatory considerations.
Passengers will ride in an all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E, equipped with Wayve’s AI technology and sensors, and have the option to accept the autonomous ride or switch to a conventional vehicle. The service, excluding airport rides, carries a trained, licensed private-hire driver for safety oversight, in compliance with Uber’s safety guidelines.
Over 140,000 Londoners have registered interest in these rides since the announcement. Both companies plan to extend the initiative globally, with ambitions to introduce Wayve-powered vehicles in 12 markets, starting with an expansion to Tokyo by 2026.
