Nvidia Acquires Hugging Face for $11.9 Billion
Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has announced its acquisition of Hugging Face, a leading platform in the AI ecosystem, for $11.9 billion, with an additional potential $1 billion in employee equity awards. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027, pending regulatory approvals. Hugging Face hosts over 3 million AI models and supports more than 18 million developers, positioning Nvidia to strengthen its role in the rapidly evolving AI market.
The acquisition comes at a significant premium, with the purchase price equating to approximately 79 times Hugging Face’s annualized revenue of $150 million. This expansive investment reflects Nvidia’s strategy to foster a developer-centric ecosystem amid increasing competition from companies like Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI in the AI hardware space.
Despite the significant valuation, concerns remain about the financial contribution of Hugging Face to Nvidia’s substantial revenue, which reached $96.2 billion last quarter. Additionally, governmental restrictions on open-source models pose potential risks to Hugging Face’s operations and Nvidia’s business going forward.
