Shares of RTX (NYSE:RTX) surged 8.2% on Tuesday following the aerospace and defense company’s report of stronger-than-expected quarterly results.
Steep Climb Amid Aviation Triumph
Formerly known as Raytheon Technologies, the company experienced remarkable growth, mainly attributed to its commercial aviation segment, in the latest quarter. RTX’s (RTX) sales shot up by 10% year-over-year, reaching $19.93 billion for the three-month period ending in December, outstripping the consensus estimate of $19.74 billion.
Earnings Soar to New Heights
Despite a marginal change in net income, which held steady at $1.43 billion, or $1.05 a share, compared with the previous year, earnings adjusted for one-time items showed impressive resilience at $1.29 a share, surpassing the consensus estimate of $1.25. RTX (RTX) anticipates adjusted earnings in the range of $5.25 to $5.40 a share in 2024, compared to the market’s projection of $5.28 a share.
A Steady Ascent in Sight
Stating the company’s prospects moving forward, Chris Calio, president and chief operating officer of RTX (RTX), commented, “RTX is beginning 2024 with strong momentum and we are projecting another year of robust sales growth and continued segment margin expansion.”
Thrusting Forward in Commercial Aviation
Notably, RTX’s (RTX) commercial aviation aftermarket, which offers parts and service to aircraft owners, experienced a substantial 23% rise in sales, with original equipment sales climbing by an impressive 20%.
Flying High: Pratt & Whitney Unit
The company’s Pratt & Whitney jet engine unit recorded a notable 25% increase in profitability, reaching $382 million as sales elevated by 14% to $6.44 billion. These gains serve as a testament to the company’s recovery from a jet engine recall due to a defect. In the third quarter, RTX (RTX) reported a charge of $2.9 billion for costs associated with removing 600 to 700 engines from planes for maintenance.
Defending Topline Growth
With a 4% organic rise in defense sales, RTX (RTX) demonstrated its strength in the segment. Notable sales included $2.8 billion for its Patriot guided enhanced missiles, and $1.3 billion on classified programs, reinforcing the company’s diverse revenue streams.
