Alibaba Group Earnings Report
Alibaba Group (NYSE:BABA) reported its Q2 earnings on Thursday, revealing revenue of approximately 269 billion yuan ($40 billion), a 9% year-over-year increase, but falling short of analyst profitability expectations. Net income dropped by 38% to 20.7 billion yuan ($3.1 billion), equating to 8.52 yuan ($1.27) per American Depositary Share (ADS), whereas analysts had predicted 10.72 yuan ($1.59) per ADS.
Key factors impacting profitability included a 75% rise in capital expenditures to 67.7 billion yuan ($10.1 billion) as the company invests in AI and cloud services, and a significant accounting charge related to a 550 million euro ($642 million) fine imposed by the European Commission on its AliExpress platform. An 8% decline in domestic e-commerce revenue to nearly 111 billion yuan ($16.5 billion) further compounded the situation.
Despite these challenges, Alibaba’s AI and cloud services revenue surged by 45%, reaching 48.4 billion yuan ($7.2 billion), contributing to a cautious optimism among investors regarding its transformation into a leading tech player in Asia.
