Amazon Plans New Superstore in Chicago
Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) is set to open a 229,000-square-foot superstore in a Chicago suburb, marking its latest attempt to penetrate the brick-and-mortar retail market after struggling with previous locations, including the closure of Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores this year.
The new superstore will not only function as a retail space, but also as a mini-warehouse, enabling Amazon to enhance its logistics and offer faster delivery times to consumers. The initiative comes as the company competes with Walmart’s typical superstore size of about 179,000 square feet.
With third-party sellers contributing $41.6 billion of Amazon’s $181.5 billion in first-quarter sales, the new location could facilitate easier pick-up options for customers and expand delivery capabilities, potentially leading to more superstores across the country if successful.
