Annaly Capital Management (NYSE:NLY) witnessed a commendable 1.2% surge in its stock during Wednesday’s after-hours trading session. This spike comes on the heels of the company’s Q4 earnings report, which revealed a surprising increase in earnings per share for distribution, despite a decline in interest rates.

Exceeding Expectations

The Q4 EPS for distribution stood at $0.68, surpassing the average analyst estimate of $0.65. This figure showed an improvement from the $0.66 reported in Q3, although it fell from $0.89 in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Optimistic Tone from Leadership

CEO and Chief Investment Officer David Finkelstein expressed his satisfaction with the company’s performance, stating, “Annaly delivered a 10.1% economic return in the fourth quarter as interest rates declined and mortgage-related assets exhibited strong performance.”

Positive Momentum

The economic return of 10.1% marked a significant turnaround from the -8.8% reported in Q3. Notably, the economic leverage reduced from 6.4x in the prior quarter to 5.7x in the latest quarter.

Strengthening Book Value

Annaly’s book value per common share ascended to $19.44 as of December 31, 2023 (exceeding the Visible Alpha consensus of $19.02) from $18.25 at the end of September 2023, indicating a robust uptrend in value.

Financial Expansion

The company’s total assets saw a notable increase, reaching $93.2 billion by the end of December 2023, compared to $89.6 billion at the close of September 2023.

Strategic Portfolio Management

Annaly’s total portfolio, valued at $74.3 billion, comprised $65.7 billion in a highly liquid agency portfolio. Notably, the agency portfolio witnessed a 4% decrease, primarily driven by strategic portfolio activity.

Key Financial Metrics

The report revealed that the Q4 net interest income was -$53.6 million, declining from -$45.3 million in Q3, while the net servicing income dropped to $87.3 million from $88.0 million in the previous quarter.

Adapting to Market Conditions

Despite the challenging interest rate environment, Annaly demonstrated resilience with a net interest margin, excluding PAA, of 1.58%, reflecting a slight increase from the previous quarter’s 1.48%.

Looking Ahead

With a conference call scheduled for February 9 at 9:00 AM ET, investors eagerly anticipate further insights from the management regarding the company’s future outlook and strategic initiatives.
