Apple and Micron: Memory Technology Developments
Apple is in discussions with AI start-up PrismML, which claims that its technology can reduce on-device memory usage by up to 15 times while enhancing processing speeds by up to 8 times. This innovation comes as Apple faces rising memory costs, leading the company to increase device prices by over $200. Currently, there is no formal deal in place, but potential adoption of this technology could help Apple maintain its profit margins.
Micron Technology has experienced a surge in profits due to increased demand for memory chips, driven by a shortage in supply for AI data centers. In the third quarter of 2026, Micron reported a non-GAAP earnings per share increase of over 1,200%, reaching $25.11. However, the rise of more efficient memory processing could threaten Micron’s current profit margins of 74%, even as the memory market is projected to expand to over $1 trillion in the next year.
