Key Investment Moves by Bill Ackman
Billionaire Bill Ackman, through Pershing Square Capital Management, significantly altered his investment strategy in the second quarter of 2023. Ackman sold over 25% of his Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) stake while increasing his position in Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) by nearly 10%.
Since the end of Q2, Microsoft’s stock has surged approximately 30%, and Amazon’s has risen around 10%. Notably, in Q2, Amazon posted a 20% overall growth rate with a 43% increase in operating income, largely due to strong performance from Amazon Web Services (AWS). In contrast, Microsoft’s revenue and earnings increased by 18% year-over-year during the same period.
Looking ahead, Amazon is investing $220 billion into data centers by 2026, which could further enhance its AWS revenue growth. With its operating income from AWS growing at a 64% year-over-year rate in Q2, analysis suggests Amazon might represent a better investment opportunity compared to Microsoft at this time.
