BYD Surpasses Tesla in Q2 EV Deliveries
China’s BYD delivered 557,090 battery electric vehicles (EVs) in the second quarter of 2023, eclipsing Tesla’s 480,126 deliveries by nearly 77,000 units. Analysts from Visible Alpha project BYD’s total EV sales for 2023 will reach approximately 2.4 million, compared to Tesla’s estimated 1.65 million, with long-term predictions suggesting BYD will sell 4 million EVs by 2030, while Tesla’s deliveries may only reach 2.65 million.
Key Factors Behind BYD’s Growth
BYD’s success is attributed to its diverse vehicle lineup and robust vertical supply chain, which allows for rapid development and lower costs. As of 2025, China’s EV market is projected to account for 55% of car sales, positioning BYD favorably in its domestic market. In contrast, Tesla relies heavily on its Model Y and Model 3, generating over 97% of its sales from these two models, with other models, such as the Cybertruck, failing to meet initial expectations.
