Cattle Markets Show Mixed Results as Front Months Surge Amid Cash Trade Updates

Live cattle futures closed mixed on April 26, with April contracts up $4.20 at $256.875, while other contracts varied from down 25 cents to up $1.75. Cash trade started early this week, ranging from $250-252 and reaching $256-257 by Wednesday. The Fed cattle exchange auction sold 517 of 1,036 head offered at $256-258, with one dressed lot at $404. Feeder cattle futures were also mixed, with the April contract closing up 20 cents at $372.275.

In the wholesale market, Boxed Beef prices decreased, with Choice boxes down 85 cents to $388.05 and Select down $2.53 to $386.25. The USDA estimated federally inspected cattle slaughter at 109,000 head for Wednesday, bringing the weekly total to 324,000, which is 5,000 head higher than last week but 22,156 head lower than the same week last year.
