Live cattle futures fell sharply on Thursday, decreasing by $3 to $4.90 across most contracts. Limited cash trade was reported, with sales of $260 in Kansas and $265 in the North. The Fed Cattle Exchange’s online auction saw 652 head offered but no sales, and feeder cattle futures dropped the $9.25 limit, with May contracts down $1.725.
The USDA estimated Wednesday’s federally inspected cattle slaughter at 108,000 head, bringing the weekly total to 321,000 head, which is up 3,000 head from the previous week but down 36,571 from the same week last year. The wholesale boxed beef prices showed a decline, with Choice boxes down 77 cents to $392.85 and Select down $3.61 to $387.52.
In terms of export sales, 8,095 MT of beef were sold for 2026 in the week ending May 14, slightly lower than the previous week, with shipments at 12,263 MT, the third lowest for the calendar year.
