SpaceX has secured significant partnerships to rent data center capacity from Google and AI startup Anthropic, aiming to offset its AI infrastructure costs. The deal with Anthropic, valued at over $1.2 billion per month, began on May 6, 2023, and will run through May 2029. The agreement with Google, worth $920 million monthly, is set to start in October 2026 and continue until June 2029.
Both companies will gain access to substantial Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs)—over 220,000 for Anthropic and around 110,000 for Google—highlighting Nvidia’s continued dominance in the AI sector despite efforts from tech giants like Alphabet to develop their own AI technologies.
SpaceX plans to launch satellite-based data centers, utilizing Nvidia chips, to facilitate faster and more cost-effective AI compute capabilities. This initiative will mark a shift towards orbital data centers, leveraging SpaceX’s reusable rocket technology and expertise in satellite manufacturing.
