Cattle Futures See Gains Amid Mixed Beef Prices
Market Update: Livestock Prices Climb on Friday
Live cattle futures increased by 45 to 95 cents by midday Friday. Cash trade this week recorded prices between $200 and $201 in the South, while Northeast sales were between $202 and $205. Additionally, feeder cattle futures rose between 30 to 85 cents. The CME Feeder Cattle Index reported a rise of 27 cents, reaching $278.31 on January 15.
Beef Prices and Slaughter Numbers
The USDA’s Thursday PM report showed mixed wholesale Boxed Beef prices. The Choice/Select spread tightened to $12.37. Choice boxes increased by 41 cents, reaching $333.82 per hundredweight, and Select boxes saw a rise of $2.07 to $321.45. Furthermore, USDA estimated the federally inspected cattle slaughter for Thursday at 122,000 head, bringing the weekly total to 488,000 head. This figure is 14,000 head more than last week and up 34,478 head from the same week last year.
