On Thursday, live cattle futures increased between $1.17 to $2.20, with cash trade reaching $230 per hundredweight across the U.S. The Fed Cattle Exchange online auction reported no sales for 1,530 head, despite bids at the same price. Feeder cattle futures also rose, closing $2.60 to $4.90 higher, while the CME Feeder Cattle Index fell by $2.40 to $350.72.
USDA’s export sales for beef in 2026 stood at 9,377 metric tons for the week ending July 16, showing an increase from the previous week. Beef shipments totaled 12,544 metric tons, a rebound from last week’s low. A Reuters survey anticipates that the upcoming Cattle on Feed report will indicate a 3.3% decline in placements for June compared to last year and a 2.8% drop in marketings.
Wholesale boxed beef prices decreased Thursday afternoon, with Choice boxes down 63 cents to $362.87 and Select down $1.82 to $348.75. USDA reported a Thursday cattle slaughter of 108,000, bringing the weekly total to 411,000 head, which is 22,000 lower than the previous week and 42,306 head fewer than the same week last year.
