**Oklo and X-Energy: Next-Generation Nuclear Stocks in Pre-Commercial Phase**
Oklo (NYSE: OKLO) and X-Energy (NASDAQ: XE) are both emerging players in the small modular reactor (SMR) space, with Oklo having gone public via a SPAC merger in May 2024 and X-Energy following suit in April 2024. Each company is developing innovative reactor designs: Oklo’s Aurora Powerhouse utilizes a liquid sodium cooling system, while X-Energy’s XE-100 relies on pressurized helium gas. Both companies aim to complete their initial reactors by the first quarter of 2027, pending U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission approvals.
As speculative investments, neither company’s design is commercially deployed yet, and both have received preliminary support from the U.S. Department of Energy. Oklo is in the construction phase at the Idaho National Laboratory, while X-Energy is set to build at a Dow Chemical site in Texas. Both firms also focus on nuclear fuel operations, with Oklo working on projects involving surplus plutonium, and X-Energy manufacturing advanced TRISO fuel for safer reactor operation.
