Amazon Stock Update
As of now, Amazon’s stock (NASDAQ: AMZN) has declined approximately 12% from its all-time closing high of $284.02 on August 3, currently trading around $249. This follow-up comes after a notable 21% jump attributed to a strong second-quarter report. Despite this decline, Amazon Web Services (AWS) continues to show significant growth, with revenue increasing 37% year-over-year in Q2 to $42.2 billion.
Recent Developments
On August 31, the Federal Trade Commission and 22 state attorneys general filed a lawsuit against Amazon over its advertising auction practices, alleging misinformation regarding second-price auctions. Amazon disputes these claims, estimating a $8 billion savings for advertisers from 2021 to 2025. Concurrently, the company’s heavy investment in artificial intelligence has resulted in a negative free cash flow of approximately $7.6 billion over the trailing 12 months, despite a 43% rise in operating income to $27.5 billion in Q2.
Financial Metrics
Amazon’s advertising revenue grew by 26% year-over-year to about $19.8 billion in Q2. With a backlog of roughly $496 billion in AWS commitments as of June 30, up from $195 billion a year earlier, the demand for cloud services remains robust. The company’s significant investments have contributed to a trailing twelve-month spending of $169 billion on property and equipment, up from $103 billion the previous year.
