Tesla Shifts Production Focus to Optimus Robots

Tesla has halted production of its Model S and Model X vehicles at its Fremont facility to prioritize manufacturing for its Optimus humanoid robot. This shift signifies Tesla’s strategy to evolve into a “physical AI company.” The company’s capital expenditures soared 142% year-over-year to $5.79 billion in Q2, leading to a negative free cash flow of $1.09 billion.

During the company’s Q1 earnings call on April 22, CEO Elon Musk projected that production of several thousand Optimus robots would begin in 2025. However, delays have pushed the timeline, with the first robots expected off the line in 2024 for internal use and research, rather than for customer deployment. A second manufacturing site at Gigafactory Texas is being prepared to eventually produce up to 10 million units annually.
