EU Directs Meta to Reduce Addiction Levels on Instagram and Facebook to Avoid Severe Penalties

The European Union has urged Meta Platforms (META) to eliminate features from Instagram and Facebook that are deemed overly addictive, including infinite scrolling and autoplay videos. If Meta does not comply, it risks fines reaching up to 6% of its global annual revenue.

EU regulators have indicated that the adjustments could also involve implementing screen time reminders and modifications to the recommendation system to reduce excessive user engagement, particularly among teenagers. The concerns stem from findings that Meta may have violated the Digital Services Act, introduced in 2022, by not adequately assessing potential risks associated with prolonged use.

Henna Virkkunen, the European Commission’s executive vice president for digital policy, emphasized the need to prioritize user health while noting that these findings are preliminary, allowing Meta an opportunity to respond before any final decisions are made.
