The EV king, Tesla Inc TSLA started the new year on a rocky note, falling short of analyst estimates and cautioning about slower growth in the year ahead. However, Chinese EV makers Nio NIO, XPeng XPEV, and Li Auto LI saw a surge in YoY deliveries in the early weeks of 2024. Similarly, BYD Company Limited BYDDY had its best January yet with a 33% YoY rise, overtaking Tesla’s performance in the last quarter of 2023.
Despite Tesla’s struggles, a different story emerged as pickup accessory maker Worksport WKSP reported impressive fourth-quarter figures, showcasing a promising outlook for the EV sector.
Tesla’s weak auto revenue signaled challenges ahead. The company also warned of notably lower vehicle volume growth in 2024 compared to 2023. As for its fourth quarter, Tesla reported a 3% rise in revenue to $25.17 billion, missing LSEG’s estimate of $25.6 billion. The company’s operating margin nearly halved from the previous year, standing at 8.2%. Emphasizing its focus on launching the “next-generation” vehicle, Tesla finds itself in a precarious position, caught between two major growth waves. The long-anticipated electric pickup, Cybertruck, finally hit the market at the end of 2023, but ramping up its production has been fraught with complexity.
Meanwhile, Worksport’s unaudited revenue for its fourth quarter soared by 2,050% YoY to $839,690, following an impressive 2,400% growth in its third quarter.
During the reported quarter, Worksport bolstered its production, adding a second line at its U.S. facility. The company’s focus on “made in the USA” tonneau covers, set to be available on platforms like Amazon and Walmart, reflects its commitment to sustainable automotive innovation. Worksport is also preparing to release its COR portable battery system, followed by the SOLIS solar-powered tonneau cover. These products are poised to address range anxiety and provide power in remote locations, revolutionizing off-road driving and camping experiences worldwide.
While concerns loom over a slowdown in EV progress, companies like Worksport could catalyze the industry’s growth with their groundbreaking innovations, even as traditional automakers, including General Motors GM and Ford Motor F, grapple with their own challenges in response to the shifting landscape.
