AMD Shares Drop Amid Sector Concerns

Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) experienced an 18% decline in share value by the end of July 2023, contributing to a significant sell-off in the semiconductor sector. The drop occurred as fears mounted over potential overspending in artificial intelligence (AI), prompting worries that tech companies may pull back on spending. Collectively, 20 of the world’s largest semiconductor companies lost approximately $1 trillion in market capitalization during the same period.

In the first half of 2023, AMD’s research and development costs surged to $1.2 billion, reflecting a 142% increase from the prior year. Despite reporting strong second-quarter earnings with an EPS of $1.66 and revenue of $11.55 billion—both exceeding analyst expectations—investors remain skeptical due to heightened market expectations around AI growth. AMD’s current price-to-earnings ratio stands at 123, significantly above the tech sector average of 35, signaling potential volatility as investors adjust their outlook.
