Understanding How $2 Million Impacts Retirement in the Midwest

If your retirement fund contains $2 million, this amount could support you for a minimum of 33 years across all states in the Midwest region. This finding comes from a recent GOBankingRates study that explores how long $2 million in retirement savings can sustain retirees throughout various U.S. states.

Notably, even in a scenario where Social Security benefits diminish, $2 million remains a sufficient sum for a prolonged retirement in the Midwest.

Methodology: GOBankingRates calculated national average annual expenditures for those aged 65 and older using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2023 Consumer Expenditure Survey. State-level expenditure estimates were derived by multiplying the national figure by each state’s cost-of-living index for 2024, sourced from the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center. The duration that $2 million will last in each state was determined by dividing $2 million by both the average annual expenditures and the expenses minus expected Social Security income. All data was collected as of March 7, 2025.
