Methodology: GOBankingRates calculated national average annual expenditures for those aged 65 and older using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2023 Consumer Expenditure Survey. State-level expenditure estimates were derived by multiplying the national figure by each state’s cost-of-living index for 2024, sourced from the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center. The duration that $2 million will last in each state was determined by dividing $2 million by both the average annual expenditures and the expenses minus expected Social Security income. All data was collected as of March 7, 2025.
