Key Financial Strategies of Major Hyperscalers in AI Investment

Five major hyperscalers, including Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle, are pursuing aggressive AI investments, each adopting distinct financial strategies. Microsoft, for instance, reported a free cash flow of $19.6 billion in Q2 2026, relying mainly on cash flow for its AI buildout. In contrast, Oracle has borrowed heavily, raising $43 billion in fiscal 2026, and pre-funds substantial portions of its builds through customer agreements.

Alphabet’s cash flow turned negative for the first time since its IPO, at a loss of $5.9 billion, despite holding $126.8 billion in liquid reserves. This situation forced the company to halt share buybacks and raise $20.7 billion in long-term debt. Amazon has amassed a total debt approaching $133 billion, with most of its AI funding sourced from bonds. Meta’s strategy involves high levels of debt, totaling $83.7 billion, while collaborating with BlackRock on data center investments.

Overall, the investments reveal a varied approach to financial strategies—some companies leverage cash flow, while others increasingly rely on debt or partnerships to fund their AI ambitions. As their respective cash flows and debt levels dictate the sustainability of these investments, it remains to be seen whose financial strategies will prove most effective in the long run.
