Lean hog futures experienced modest gains on Thursday, with increases ranging from 10 to 52 cents, except for October futures which fell by 27 cents. The USDA reported a decline of 99 cents in the national base hog price, now at $89.76. Additionally, the CME Lean Hog Index dipped by 23 cents to $92.42 as of August 25.
In export sales for the week ending August 20, 38,690 metric tons (MT) of pork were sold for 2026, marking a 12-week high. Mexico was the leading buyer with 22,700 MT, while Japan purchased 2,600 MT. Shipments totaled 29,902 MT, with Mexico receiving 13,800 MT and Japan 4,400 MT.
USDA’s afternoon report indicated a decrease of $1.75 in pork carcass cutout value, now at $94.09, with only ham showing an increase. Thursday’s federally inspected hog slaughter was estimated at 486,000 head, totaling 1.901 million head for the week—down 28,000 from the previous week and 1,679 from the same week last year.
