Lean hog futures exhibited mixed results on Thursday, April 14, 2023, with May futures rising by $0.05 to $94.125, while other contracts fell by $0.20 to $0.45. The USDA’s national base hog price was not reported, but the CME Lean Hog Index increased by $0.27 to $90.60.
For the week ending April 9, pork exports totaled 37,285 metric tons (MT), up from the previous week, with shipments at 35,336 MT. The USDA reported a rise in the pork carcass cutout value, now at $97.04 per cwt, an increase of $1.90. Federally inspected hog slaughter was estimated at 494,000 head for Wednesday and 1.477 million for the week, exceeding last week’s total by 124,000 head and the total from the same week last year by 15,670 head.
