IonQ has launched its sixth-generation quantum computing platform, Superion 256, with the first integrated 256-qubit quantum processing units (QPUs) fabricated at its SkyWater subsidiary. The platform transitioned from early design to ion trapping within a year, and it has already trapped ions in prototype systems being constructed across multiple U.S. facilities. Customer deliveries for Superion 256 are expected in 2027, with the first system pre-sold in the first quarter of 2026.
Superion 256 leverages IonQ’s Electronic Qubit Control (EQC) technology, attaining a 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity in October 2025. The design is fit for standard data center racks and requires less power than a GPU rack, featuring a suitable cooling system. Future enhancements will scale the system from 256 qubits to millions, with ongoing development of Superion 10K integrating CMOS technology.
In related news, IBM and Lockheed Martin have established a quantum innovation hub at ETH Zurich, featuring Switzerland’s first IBM Quantum System Two. This partnership aims to blend their expertise in quantum computing and AI. Meanwhile, Arm Holdings introduced CSS for Mobile 2, an AI-optimized mobile compute platform.
