Kraft Heinz and the Gates Foundation Portfolio
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation holds Kraft Heinz in its portfolio, maintaining this position for nearly four years. As of July 2025, the foundation sold 150,000 shares, indicating a cautious approach towards the consumer staples company, which closed at $26.22 on July 27, significantly below its average buy price of $37.20.
The foundation’s current investment strategy leans heavily towards four major stocks: Berkshire Hathaway, Canadian National Railway, Waste Management, and Caterpillar, which collectively comprise nearly 78% of their $33 billion asset portfolio. Despite the setback of Kraft Heinz, which offers a dividend yield of 6.2% but has reduced payouts recently, the company reported generating $3.7 billion in free cash flow.
In contrast to Warren Buffett, also a significant Kraft Heinz shareholder, the Gates Foundation has shown a willingness to divest; a strategy that may reflect its long-term investment outlook influenced by Buffett’s principles, while simultaneously navigating the challenges of holding underperforming stocks.
