Amidst the broader concerns surrounding China’s economy and the tepid equity markets, the Macau casino sector is emerging as a beacon of hope, according to analyses by Jefferies. Notably, gaming revenue is outpacing expectations and trending upward as the Chinese New Year approaches, underscoring the resilience of the industry within Greater China.

Revenue Performance

Jefferies’ checks revealed that the daily revenue for the Macau casino sector during the week ending January 21 exceeded the previous week’s tally. This uptick was primarily driven by higher VIP win-rates and increased mass traffic. Analyst David Katz highlighted that this level mirrored the strong performance witnessed in the first seven days of the year, benefitting from robust New Year’s Eve visitation and record-high post-COVID arrivals. Notably, results in both the mass market and VIP segments for January show improvement over the gaming revenue levels seen in December, a month typically characterized by subdued activity before the Chinese New Year festivities.

Market Dynamics

Despite these robust revenue trends, Katz pointed out that the fundamentals of the Macau sector remain disconnected from valuations. Notably, the Shanghai Composite Index and Hong Kong Stock Market have witnessed declines of 19% and 33% respectively since their 2023 peaks, with Macau casino names following a similar downward trajectory.

Forecast and Investment Outlook

Looking ahead, the upcoming earnings results from Las Vegas Sands (NYSE:LVS) and Sands China (OTCPK:SCHYY) on January 24 are anticipated to act as a pivotal catalyst. Investors are expected to focus on the update relating to Chinese visitor behavior and forward bookings in the run-up to the Chinese New Year festivities. This year’s celebrations, spanning from February 10-24, carry special significance as they are the first since the onset of the pandemic without the looming shadow of COVID-19.

Despite these positive indicators, Jefferies is keenly observing the prevailing sentiment, noting that perceived headwinds continue to dominate over improving fundamentals and earnings. This may present investors with attractive entry points if the sector remains range-bound until concerns related to China’s economic outlook ease. The firm is particularly optimistic about the prospects of Galaxy Entertainment (OTCPK:GXYEF) and Sands China (OTCPK:SCHYY), given the new offerings entering the market.
