AI Development Slowdown Urged by Industry Leaders
Last weekend, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for a slowdown in artificial intelligence (AI) development, emphasizing risks such as recursive self-improvement and recent cybersecurity incidents. His views were echoed by OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Elon Musk from xAI, raising concerns that a collective effort to curb AI advancements could significantly impact sales among hardware suppliers and service providers.
Key companies like Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and CrowdStrike may face challenges due to this potential slowdown. AMD’s new MI450 series GPUs, essential for AI workloads, represent over half of the company’s revenue; a reduction in demand could derail its growth. Similarly, CrowdStrike, which has seen an 85% stock increase due to AI service demand, may suffer declines due to its high price-to-sales ratio of 39.4 if AI development decelerates.
