Meta to Sell Excess Computing Power Amid Concerns Over AI Spending

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company might sell excess artificial intelligence (AI) computing capacity if it has overbuilt, highlighting concerns that it has spent too aggressively on AI in recent years. This comes as Meta plans to launch a cloud business to monetize surplus AI capabilities, a shift from its prior investments in costly ventures like the metaverse.

During a shareholder meeting in May, Zuckerberg indicated that the company could offer this excess computing power at a premium. Investors are worried about the implications of overinvestment in AI, especially since Meta has accumulated significant losses from its Reality Labs division, which continues to bear the financial burden of the metaverse. Meta’s stock is down 9% this year, and analysts caution that further declines may occur if investors grow concerned about the company’s spending strategies.
