Meta Faces Lawsuit Over Allegations of Discriminatory AI Layoffs Impacting Disabled Employees

Twenty-six current and former employees of Meta Platforms Inc. have filed a lawsuit against the company in federal court in Oakland, California, alleging that layoffs conducted via artificial intelligence disproportionately impacted workers with disabilities, those on medical or family leave, and pregnant employees. The lawsuit contends that Meta used AI-assisted systems to evaluate employees based on factors like productivity and performance metrics, unfairly disadvantaging those whose output was affected by protected leaves.

The employees were informed in May of impending layoffs starting July 22. They are seeking a temporary court order to halt these layoffs while pursuing arbitration as per their employment agreements and requesting an independent audit of the AI selection process. Meta has denied the allegations, asserting that decisions about workforce changes were made by humans, not AI. The plaintiffs claim violations of federal laws regarding discrimination based on disability and pregnancy, as well as state and local laws mandating bias testing for automated decision-making systems.
