Meta Platforms Initiates Subscription Service to Diversify Revenue

On October 3, 2023, Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ: META) announced the launch of its new subscription service, Meta One, aimed at providing enhanced AI features across its platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The top-tier subscription, targeted at businesses and content creators, is priced at $499 per month, while individual users can opt for a core subscription at $7.99 or a premium at $19.99 monthly. Currently, Meta has around 15 million subscriptions and trials under its belt.

In Q2 2023, the company reported $60.8 billion in revenue, a 28% increase year-over-year, largely driven by advertising, which accounted for approximately $59.36 billion. Total expenses surged to $42.03 billion, marking a 55% rise year-over-year, and are projected to reach between $130 billion and $145 billion for the entire year. The introduction of subscription services is part of Meta’s strategy to develop alternative revenue streams amid significant AI infrastructure investments, which totaled $31.08 billion in the last quarter.

Analysts predict that Meta’s revenue may reach $73.66 billion in Q3 2023, reflecting a 23.5% year-over-year increase. The potential growth in subscription revenue, categorized under “Other Revenue,” could significantly bolster Meta’s financials as it aims to offset its expanding AI costs.
