Key Facts on Nvidia’s Server CPU Ambitions

Nvidia anticipates $20 billion in server CPU revenue for the current fiscal year, positioning itself to capture a significant share of the projected $200 billion server CPU market. This projection follows the company’s fiscal 2027 Q1 results released on May 20, 2023, which illustrate Nvidia’s continued dominance in the AI chip market.

The company plans to enter the stand-alone server CPU market with its next-generation Vera CPU, which it intends to deploy in collaboration with major hyperscalers. Currently, Nvidia’s competitors, AMD and Intel, reported substantial increases in data center revenues— AMD’s at $5.8 billion (up 57% YoY) and Intel at $5.1 billion (up 22% YoY)—making Nvidia’s ambitions particularly significant as it aims to establish itself amidst this existing demand.

Nvidia’s shift to using Arm Holdings’ architecture for its CPUs aligns with a growing trend, as research suggests Arm-based CPUs could dominate 90% of the AI data center market by 2029, up from 15% a year ago. As Nvidia asserts its position, competitors like Intel and AMD may face challenges in retaining their market shares.
