Andrej Karpathy, a founding member of Microsoft (MSFT) backed OpenAI, announced on social
media website X that he has left the artificial intelligence company.
The AI researcher will be focusing on “personal projects” for the time being. He was part of
the founding team of OpenAI in 2015, working as
a research scientist until 2017.
Karpathy then served as senior director for AI at
Tesla (TSLA) until 2022, and joined OpenAI once more in February 2023. He noted that the
departure from OpenAI was amicable and “not a result of any particular event, issue, or
drama”.
