Key Points

Rivian (NASDAQ:RIVN) CEO RJ Scaringe has unveiled the Rivian R2, its closest competitor to Tesla’s Model Y. The R2, which launched invitations for final orders on June 9, achieves impressive energy efficiency metrics, matching the Model Y’s EPA rating of 105 MPGe (combined) and energy consumption at 32 kWh per 100 miles.

With a total EPA range of 330 miles compared to the Model Y’s 306 miles, the Rivian R2 offers a competitive edge, thanks to its larger 86.8 kWh battery pack. This development marks a significant milestone for Rivian, potentially challenging Tesla’s dominance in the electric vehicle market.

To meet demand, Rivian is increasing production capacity at its Georgia plant by 50% to 300,000 units per year, with production expected to begin in late 2028. The company has also secured a $4.5 billion loan from the Department of Energy and a $5.8 billion joint venture with Volkswagen Group to further enhance its manufacturing capabilities.
