Rivian Automotive, Inc. is recalling 34,824 electric delivery vans in the United States due to a defect in the seat belt system that may prevent proper restraint of drivers, increasing the risk of injury in a crash. This recall affects select EDV models from the years 2022 through 2025, and is based on a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). While no injuries or incidents related to this issue have been reported, NHTSA had initiated an investigation regarding fraying seat belt cables after receiving complaints.
The concern arises when drivers sit on a buckled seat belt, potentially damaging the pretensioner cable, which is crucial for tightening the belt during sudden stops or impacts. Rivian has introduced an over-the-air software update to detect improper seat belt usage and will replace the driver’s seat belt pretensioner assembly at no cost.
This recall is part of a broader trend, as Stellantis N.V. is also recalling 72,509 Ram models due to a software malfunction affecting the instrument cluster display. Meanwhile, Ford Motor Company is recalling 1.9 million vehicles worldwide for defective rear-view cameras.
