A move that could upend a market dominated by companies such as Medtronic (MDT), Samsung Electronics (OTCPK:SSNLF) is advancing technology for noninvasive blood glucose monitoring in competition with Apple (AAPL), as reported by Bloomberg.

Furthermore, Samsung is said to be working on technology for constant blood pressure checking, which adds an extra dimension to its competitive stance against Apple. While Samsung smartwatches already offer the feature, the monitoring is inconsistent and requires calibration with a separate blood pressure checker.

“If we can do continuous blood pressure and glucose, we’re in a whole different ballgame,” Samsung’s mobile digital health chief, Hon Pak, said. “I think that’s where everyone is trying to get to. We’re putting significant investment toward that.” Pak didn’t indicate a timeline for the company’s plans but noted that its noninvasive glucose monitoring feature would reach the market in some form within five years.

With companies such as Medtronic (MDT), DexCom (DXCM), and Abbott (ABT) dominating the market for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), the emergence of Samsung and Apple in this market is poised to disrupt the current status quo significantly.

In February 2023, shares of all three MedTech firms came under pressure after Bloomberg reported that Apple (AAPL) had reached key milestones in its quest to develop a continuous blood glucose monitoring system.
