Shell plc (SHEL) is restructuring its U.S. power portfolio through two significant transactions: the acquisition of a 100% equity interest in Hunlock Creek Generating LLC and the sale of its interests in RISEC Holdings, LLC to Constellation Energy Generation, LLC for $715 million. The transactions are set to close in the first quarter of 2027, pending regulatory approval.

The acquisition adds 169 megawatts (MW) of natural gas-fired generation capacity in Pennsylvania, enhancing Shell Energy North America’s presence in the PJM Interconnection power market, which encompasses 13 states and serves over 65 million people. Concurrently, the sale of RISEC, which owns a 609-MW gas turbine power plant in New England, is expected to generate a significant financial gain for Shell.

These moves reflect Shell’s strategy of optimizing its power assets by investing in growth opportunities while divesting existing interests when market conditions are favorable. This approach aims to balance capital allocation and improve financial returns in evolving U.S. electricity markets.
