South32 is closer to federal approval for its Hermosa zinc-silver project in Arizona, following the US Forest Service’s release of a Final Environmental Impact Statement and Draft Record of Decision that supports development on National Forest land. The authorization would allow infrastructure expansion beyond private property and includes plans for a primary access road, a dry-stack tailings facility, and a section of a 138 kV transmission line.

The project footprint is approximately 750 acres and aims to utilize 90% less water than typical mining operations, potentially creating up to 900 jobs during peak production. The Draft Record of Decision initiates a 45-day objection period before a final decision is expected in July.

South32 has secured state permits for surface infrastructure on private land and committed to nearly 140 conservation measures developed with community stakeholders. The company aims to implement an adaptive management framework to enhance environmental protections as the project progresses.
