Amid a day of tepid momentum, the U.S. stock market displayed resilience, with the S&P 500 (SP500) index challenging and briefly crossing the momentous 5,000 points threshold. A post-earnings surge in Walt Disney (DIS) was counteracted by a downturn in PayPal (PYPL).
Even as Treasury yields rose following robust note and bond auctions, the benchmark S&P 500 (SP500) index hovered near the flatline for the better part of the day, eventually concluding 0.06% higher at 4,997.91 points. At its session peak, the index reached an all-time high of 5,000.40 points, marking its maiden foray past the key level.
Nasdaq and Dow Deliver Mixed Gains
The tech-focused Nasdaq Composite (COMP.IND) closed at 15,793.71 points, with a 0.24% uptick, propelled by a sustained upward trajectory in chip stocks. On the other hand, the blue-chip Dow (DJI) logged a 0.13% gain, ending the session at 38,726.20 points.
Market Sector Performance and Notable Stock Movements
Out of the 11 S&P sectors, six finished in positive territory, led by Energy, while Utilities lagged. Disney (DIS) stocks surged over 11%, emerging as one of the top gainers on both the S&P 500 (SP500) and the Dow (DJI). The entertainment behemoth’s quarterly earnings report exceeded expectations owing to cost reductions, promising enlarged dividends and resumption of stock buybacks.
In contrast, PayPal (PYPL) bore the brunt of disappointing quarterly active accounts and weak guidance, concluding as the leading percentage decliner on both the S&P (SP500) and the Nasdaq (COMP.IND). Several other firms, including Ralph Lauren (RL) and Tapestry (TPR), witnessed substantial stock movements following robust or lackluster earnings performances.
Market Sentiment and Bond Yields
Data portraying a resilient labor market instigated a downturn in sentiment and led yields higher on Thursday as traders offloaded bonds. Despite hearty demand in previous sessions for a record $42 billion 10-year note auction, as well as a $25 billion 30-year bond auction today, yields failed to ignite.
The longer-term 30-year yield (US30Y) climbed 5 basis points to 4.36%, while the 10-year yield (US10Y) also rose 5 basis points to 4.15%. The more rate-sensitive 2-year yield (US2Y) escalated by 4 basis points to 4.46%.
Expert Insights and Outlook
Leo Nelissen, a member of the investing group iREIT on Alpha, observed, “Today’s muted market, particularly in the technology sector, witnessed outperformance from value stocks such as energy and real estate, propelled by robust jobless claims data. The cautious market sentiment ahead of potential CPI revisions and strong-tech stock performance in recent weeks highlight the likelihood of a capital shift into non-tech sectors in the coming days.”
