**Sugar Prices Decline After Recent Rally**

On October 3, 2023, sugar prices saw a downturn, with October NY world sugar #11 (SBV26) dropping by 0.03 (-0.17%) and October London ICE white sugar #5 (SWV26) falling by 0.50 (-0.09%). This decline followed a significant rally that peaked with NY sugar at a 15-month high while London sugar reached a 16-month high. Analysts attribute the sell-off to profit-taking and liquidation from commodity funds amid emerging concerns over global supply strains.

Recent reports indicate that India, the world’s second-largest sugar producer, is contemplating cutting import duties to counterbalance expected increased demand during the festival season. Meanwhile, the cumulative monsoon rainfall in India has been reported at 13% below normal, highlighting potential impacts on sugar production, which may face further challenges due to weather disruptions resulting from the El Niño phenomenon. Major forecasts also predict a global sugar deficit for the 2026/27 season, with estimates ranging from -262,000 MT to -1.7 MMT, largely driven by lower production projections in key regions including India and Brazil.
