**Sugar Prices Surge Amid Global Supply Concerns**
As of October 17, 2023, sugar prices have reached significant highs, with New York’s world sugar #11 rising 0.46% to a 15-month high and London’s ICE white sugar #5 increasing 2.38%, marking a 17-month peak. The Indian government announced that it will allow the import of up to 1 million metric tons (MMT) of raw sugar tax-free until October 31 to bolster supplies ahead of the festival season.
Analysts are forecasting a global sugar deficit, with Covrig Analytics predicting a shortfall of 300,000 MT for the 2026/27 season, contrasted with earlier surplus estimates. Concurrently, StoneX adjusted its prediction for the same season’s deficit from 550,000 MT to 1.7 MMT, as global production is expected to decline due to adverse weather conditions stemming from the ongoing El Niño phenomenon impacting major sugar-producing regions such as Brazil and India.
