Tesla Ends Solar Roof Production
Tesla stopped taking orders for its Solar Roof product as of August 20, 2023, and will no longer supply the glass solar tiles to its certified installers, according to Electrek. Tesla has not reported solar deployment figures since the fourth quarter of 2023, which showed a significant decline to 41 megawatts—a 59% drop year-over-year.
Despite the cessation of the Solar Roof, Tesla’s energy generation and storage revenue continued to rise, reaching approximately $3.1 billion in Q2 2026, a 13% increase year-over-year. This revenue growth was primarily driven by higher demand for Megapack utility-scale batteries, with a deployment of 13.5 gigawatt-hours in that quarter.
The company’s decision to discontinue the Solar Roof is viewed as a strategic move to reallocate resources to more profitable segments, especially given the Solar Roof’s failure to gain traction despite initial high expectations, including a promise from CEO Elon Musk to achieve installation rates of 1,000 units per week by 2020.
